He balanced his business with his studies at Northwestern University’s American Landscape School, which he attended during the night.

In the 1940s, the company underwent a significant change. L.J. Thalmann Sr. won a bid for an old chalet that was set to be demolished for the construction of the Edens Expressway. He relocated the chalet to Wilmette, Illinois, where it served as both the company’s headquarters and his family home. Over time, customers began to refer to the business as “Chalet,” leading to a change in the company’s name.
